A well known verse, in context:
Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, [then] are ye my disciples indeed; and ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free. John 8:31-32
Do we believe this?
Are these verses the truth?
I believe they are a partial glimpse of the whole truth, like looking at the doorway of a house. And we can know more. Indeed, in these verses, we are invited to know more truth.
How?
I think the sequence is important:
- Be Jesus's disciples...
- By continuing in His word...
- This will enable us to know the truth...
- Then the truth will make us free.
It's one thing to listen to the words of Jesus, nod our heads, and think "that's a lovely saying... so true! so true!" It's another thing to listen to the words of Jesus and actually obey them.
In the practical obedience of Jesus's sometimes seemingly radical words, we can encounter some real eye opening experiences.
I think this is how we come to really "know the truth." And since Jesus is the Truth, I also think this is how we really come to know Him, and He us.
46 And why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say? 47 Whosoever cometh to me, and heareth my sayings, and doeth them, I will show you to whom he is like: 48 he is like a man which built a house, and digged deep, and laid the foundation on a rock: and when the flood arose, the stream beat vehemently upon that house, and could not shake it; for it was founded upon a rock. 49 But he that heareth, and doeth not, is like a man that without a foundation built a house upon the earth; against which the stream did beat vehemently, and immediately it fell; and the ruin of that house was great. Luke 6
